The National Lottery Community Fund Young People Parents Intervention Project

For over 30 years PATRA has been working predominantly in Nottingham to create training and employment opportunities for young people from the BAME communities.

We were delighted to be successful in obtaining a grant from the National Lottery to deliver the Young People Parents Intervention Project. It started in April 2023 and will continue for three years. The project offers holistic support to young people by reaching out to their parents, carers and guardians and to communities with services, solutions and actions that will improve their life chances, taking into account the disadvantages that they may face. We engage parents, carers and guardians to become active participants in guiding the choices and actions that young people face. By providing this service we hope to improve employment opportunities for young people.

The project provides activities to address the ongoing challenges that help young people from the BAME communities to grow and thrive through the targeting of their parents, carers and guardians. It is hoped that these activities will enhance and create connection between what is happening in various parts of the City of Nottingham where there has been an increase in crime and in some cases the creation of ‘no go’ areas.

PATRA is recruiting and working with local parents, carers and guardians through the nationally recognised and recommended Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities (SFSC) parenting programme. This programme was established by the Equality Foundation and is highly recommended by many local authorities. We offer parents a training programme, face to face, using group based sessions. This training is run by two SFSC qualified trainers. Some of the issues that are being discussed include managing anger, developing empathy, violence prevention, empathy, understanding behaviour, emotional management and social skills.
