Job Description



The Building Controls Technician B plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus heating, cooling, ventilation, and building automation systems. This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, calibrating, and repairing control systems—including those connected to the Central Building Automation System (CBAS)—and responding to alarms, service needs, and emergencies.

Whether troubleshooting system issues, coordinating repairs, or maintaining essential equipment, this role directly supports the comfort, safety, and operational continuity of the Notre Dame campus.

Key Responsibilities

CBAS System Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • Monitor, test, and troubleshoot components of the Central Building Automation System (CBAS).
  • Respond to alarms and system irregularities promptly and effectively.
  • Participate in emergency calls, including off-hours and overtime as needed.

Servicing of Controls

  • Maintain, calibrate, repair, and monitor all CBAS and local building control systems under the Utilities Department.
  • Ensure accurate control of heating, cooling, and humidification across campus.
  • Perform seasonal system checkouts, verifying system status, control accuracy, temperature and humidity levels, and equipment condition.
  • Record campus utility usage as required.

Equipment Repairs

  • Maintain, calibrate, and repair control systems for building hot water radiation, reheat systems, steam radiation, condensate pumps, domestic hot water systems, and related components.
  • Rebuild or replace device components such as valves, controllers, transmitters, thermostats, and sensors.

Materials & Inventory

  • Maintain an adequate inventory of parts and materials to ensure timely repair of equipment and components.
  • Monitor stock levels and coordinate procurement as needed.

Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with contractors, Maintenance Technicians, and fellow Building Control Technicians to complete repairs and project work.
  • Coordinate efforts to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications



Education

  • One-year certificate or technical training from a college or accredited technical school.
  • Technical school or apprenticeship program preferred.

Experience

  • 1–2 years of experience in HVAC systems, building automation controls, or related mechanical/electrical work.

Skills & Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of pneumatic and electronic controls theory, operation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and related equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair pneumatic, electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Computer literacy to interface with CBAS and related systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
