Job Summary

A position is available in Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut’s Eastern Division Distribution Department for a Utility Worker. Applicant will be responsible for performing maintenance, repairs and the operation of company-owned distribution systems. A minimum of three years’ experience in field service, distribution or related field is required. The applicant must also meet the following minimum requirements; have a high school diploma, a valid Driver’s license in the State of CT, strong customer service orientation and strong mechanical skills. Must understand and be able to interpret distribution maps, tap cards and engineering drawings. Position will primarily report to the Eastern Division.

Principal Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair to company owned fire hydrants, service lines, valves and blow offs, including flushing, valve operation, and pressure testing of water mains.
• Operate equipment such as jackhammers, gate machines, pumps, flushing tubes, leak correlating equipment, tapping machines, data collection tools, pipe locating tools, utility trucks and trailers.
• Must be highly responsive to resolving customer complaints regarding leakage, up to and including emergency repairs.
• Perform fire flow tests using Pitometer equipment and calculate flows. Must have good computer skills
• Maintain all tools, comply with company safety rules, and perform other or lesser skilled duties as assigned including meter reading.
• May participate on the Distribution Department standby roster.

Preferred Requirements

• Incumbent must possess mechanical aptitude, organizational ability, and effective communications skills, both oral and written.
• Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and the
• Knowledge of plumbing and water utility experience are desirable.
• Employee’s primary work area will be in the Eastern region but support in the Western and Central regions may be required based on department needs.
• Incumbent must be able to use hand tools (such as wrenches and gate/curb keys), drive, stand for prolonged periods of time, walk long distances, lift 100 pounds and work in confined spaces.

Education/Certifications

• A High School Diploma
• Incumbent must hold and maintain a valid State of CT license to operate a motor vehicle. A good driving record (DMV check required).
• Shall obtain a CT DI Distribution Operator Certification within 24 months ; then shall obtain a CT DII Distribution Operator certification within 36 months ; then shall obtain a CT DIII Distribution Operator certification within 60 months , and upon such DIII certification will receive a pay upgrade and will be eligible for standby rotation.

• Getting and maintaining a DOT medical card is the requirement to drive AWC trucks weighing between 10,000 lbs and 26,000 lbs. 

• Depending on department needs a CDL license may be required.

Salary

• Hours will be 7:00AM to 3:30PM, Monday through Friday.
• Job is classified as an hourly Grade 8, with a rate range that has a training wage of $39.85 per hour. If the chosen applicant already holds a desired D3 license, applicant will be eligible to start at a Grade 9.  
• Successful applicant will move through Steps 1 through 8 of the range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary.
